I love longer form promotional video. It speaks to the documentarian in me. However the #1 thing I have been suggesting to my clients and anyone who will listen in the past few years is short form videos for social media. While the below graphic doesn’t appear to be about that at first glance, consider this- It’s not a far stretch of the imagination to say that companies want to maximize their reach when they advertise. When you embed a 2 minute+ video on your website you are only reaching those who regularly visit your site.
By putting a short form video on social media or embedding in an email you can reach a much wider audience, and that is what drives traffic back to your website!
2017 here we come.
A couple weeks ago I went to Orcas Island in the Puget Sound for a family reunion. I had never been there before, but I had heard it was stunning so I decided to bring my crane and new (to me) set of vintage Nikon primes and shoot some video!
WhiskeyTown (formerly WhiskeyFest NW) is a super fun annual event here in Portland. Featuring a weekend of nonstop musical acts on multiple stages, lots of food carts, and of course, more whiskey than you could ever sample in one weekend.
I had the pleasure of shooting this with fellow Portland shooter Mike Elliott for ShoHawk Media last year, and they brought us back for this year as well! Here are a couple of videos they have already cut together from the event:
As someone who loves making images, and as a professional whose job it is to make images I am always trying to expand my image making knowledge and skill. It had been over three years since I had done a photo shoot with a model- I’ve always done much more video than photo professionally, and my still photographs tend to be taken mostly for myself when out exploring.
Daniel Corliss was looking for a skilled image maker, but he was also on a budget. I saw this as a great opportunity for both of us- I would get a small fee, some great portfolio work and practice, and he would get some great photos! Here are a couple of shots from our session. I think overall things turned out really well, and Daniel was pleased with the photos, which always makes me happy! Special thanks to Diego of Diego Giovanni Photography for lending out his studio for the day!
So it’s been… a year? Since I shot and edited this piece for photographer Zack Seckler’s shoot for #ColumbiaSportswear. The video for Day 1 was released over 6 months ago with the launch of that portion of the ad campaign, but now that the second campaign has launched I can share the video for Day 2!
Super fun shoot, a chance to shoot in a beautiful place and climb around on slippery rocks- it doesn’t get better!
There is a Director here in Portland named Chris Buchal who I occasionally have the pleasure of working for. He works incredibly hard and his videos are consistently very slickly done and combine vfx and in-camera production value. Here’s a sneak peak at a scene from his next video. Tehben Dean was the DP, and Harrisen Howes was the steadicam operator while I pulled focus. Enjoy!
